A Prepaid Call for Help: Prisons in a Pandemic
Audio Visual Material
An inmate at Virginia’s Greenville Correctional Facility speaks on the phone with producer Madison Buchanon about Covid-19 conditions in the prison. He states that proper safety precautions are not being taken in the mental health unit where he is located and expresses his fear of contracting the virus, along with doubts that he will receive proper medical attention. The call is made on a pre-paid phone card, which inmates must purchase to make phone calls. Produced as part of the series A Mask on the Mountains: Dimensions of Covid-19 in Appalachia, a project of Appalshop's Appalachian Media Institute.
