Creating in Place: Youth Photography

In the summer of 2020, children in a summer program at Letcher County's Cowan Community Center were given disposable cameras and a set of prompts, such as: "take a picture of your family;" "who/what has brought you happiness lately?;" "take a picture of how you have been feeling over the past 4 months;" and "what matters to you?"  In response, sibling photographers Grace and Elijah Owsley took photos of thee family members, home, garden, and pets.

This youth photography project is part of Appalshop's Creating in Place initiative to document and collect stories and creative expressions in its community during 2020.
