Description
In 1974 Los Angeles-based photographer Robert Gumpert traveled to Harlan County, KY to document the Brookside Coal strike (1973-74). His images capture the tension of the strike, confrontations between miners and Eastover Mine security forces, meetings of the “Brookside Women” (wives of miners who were active in the strike), as well as miners and their families, non-union workers, and residents of the county. This collection consists of 61 rolls of 35mm b/w negative strips (approx. 1500 images) and corresponding contact sheets made by the photographer.
