-
Rich and the Po’ Folk are an old-time string band from Letcher County Kentucky. Fiddler and mandolinist Rich Kirby, originally from Kentucky, has lived in Scott County, Virginia for thirty years and has performed across the region and nationally. Prize-winning banjoist John Haywood, from Floyd County, Kentucky, brings a deep store of songs, tunings, and techniques learned from Kentucky banjo legend George Gibson. He is also a painter whose work is widely praised. Guitarist Brett Ratliff hails from Van Lear, Kentucky; at a young age he’s a veteran of several bands and has a solo recording project on June Appal. Bassist Nate Polly, a native of Letcher County and retired railroad worker, took up old-time music after playing for years with Kentucky bluegrass bands. All four are enthusiastic singers.
Recordings for the 2010 release JA086, When the Whistle Blew, were recorded and mixed by Jim Price and Alan Maggard at Maggard Sound, Big Stone Gap, VA. The release was mastered by Alan Maggard. Musicians included Rich Kirby on fiddle, mandolin, and 6-string banjo; John Hayward on banjo; Brett Ratliff on on guitar; and Nate Polly on bass.
