Description
Gary Brewer learned his old-time banjo playing style from his grandfather, Finley J. "Pap" Brewer, Sr., during family visits in Roan Mountain, Tennesee. Gary tours both nationally and internationally with his father, Finley J. Brewer, Jr. and his band, Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers. Gary Brewer picked up a pair of nominations in 2000 from the International Bluegrass Music Association. Brewer was a Guitar Player of the Year finalist, and his "Jimmy Martin Songs for Dinner" was a Song of the Year finalist. Brewer and his band have performed at Lincoln Center, as well as on a variety of radio and television programs. At the time of his death at age 47 in 2000 from an automobile accident, Phillip Sexton was an active member of the gospel harmony group Master's Harmony. He performed as a musician on numerous June Appal Recordings releases, including two of his own: a solo album entitled The Banjo Still Rings, and 5th Generation with musician Gary Brewer. Philip Sexton lived with his father, musician and June Appal recording artist Lee Sexton, on Line Fork, Kentucky. His great uncle was Morgan Sexton, the banjo player and June Appal recording artist from eastern Kentucky.

Recordings for JA076, The 5th Generation, were recorded by Doug Dorshug live at WMMT's Bluegrass Express Live show on October 17, 1996 at the Appalshop Theater in Whitesburg, Kentucky.
