At the time of his death at age 47 in 2000 from an automobile accident, Phillip Sexton was an active member of the gospel harmony group Master's Harmony. He performed as a musician on numerous June Appal Recordings releases, including two of his own: a solo album entitled The Banjo Still Rings, and 5th Generation with musician Gary Brewer. Philip Sexton lived with his father, musician and June Appal recording artist Lee Sexton, on Line Fork, Kentucky. His great uncle was Morgan Sexton, the banjo player and June Appal recording artist from eastern Kentucky.

Recordings for JA073, The Banjo Still Rings, were recorded by Danny Huff, Quest Studio in Pippa Passes, Kentucky. The release was mixed by Doug Dorschug, Danny Huff and Phil Sexton, and produced by Doug Dorschug and Phil Sexton.The June Appal Project Director was Herb E. Smith. Musicians included Phil Sexton on lead vocals, banjo, guitar, and acoustic bass; Alice White on harmony vocals and acoustic bass; Al White on harmony vocals, mandolin, fiddle and guitar; Doug Dorschug on guitar; and Lee Sexton on fiddle.
