Orville Hicks, Sr. was born May 6, 1951 in Watauga County, North Carolina, the youngest of eleven children. His great grandfather, Council "Counce" Harmon is the earliest known teller of Jack tales in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Orville Hicks learned his tales form his mother and from his second cousin Ray Hicks. Orville now lives in Deep Gap, North Carolina with his wife, Sylvia, and his sons, Wayne, Donny, Curt and Joseph. He was part of the 1989 Visiting Artist program in Randlph County, NC and appears weekly in schools, at universities and festivals all over the Appalachian region.
Recordings for JA0062, Carryin' On, were recorded at Appalshop on February 6-7, 1990 by Kelly Blair. The release was mixed and edited by Tracy Frazier and D.G. White. Musicians included Don Mussell on fiddle, D.G. White on banjo, and Morgan Sexton on banjo.
