The Payroll Boys were a traditional mountain music group from Letcher County, Kentucky who played from 1977 to 1982. Band members included Sonny Houston from Hemphill, Kentucky, Roger Hall from Whitesburg, KY, Jack Tottle of Scott County, Virginia, and Jack Wright from Wise, Virginia.
Recordings for the 1983 release JA046, Fields Where We Once Played, were recorded at Maggard Studio in Big Stone Gap, Virginia by C. Maggard, A. Maggard and Doug Dorschug. The release was produced by Jack Wright and George Reynolds. Musicians included Jack Tottle on lead vocals and mandolin; Roger Hall on tenor vocals and banjop; Sonny Houston on baritone vocals, electric bass and string bass; Jack Wright on guitar, baritone vocals, lead vocals, and Jew's harp; Jerry Douglas on dobro; Marion Sumner on fiddle; and Eddie Trent on pedal steel.
This audio collection consists of ¼-inch production masters.
