Description
The Plank Road String Band, formed in the early 1970s, featured five musicians from Lexington, Virginia. The band's name came from banjo player Al Tharp, who once lived on Plank Road outside of Lexington. In addition to banjo and guitar, their distinctive sound came from its inclusion of twin fiddles and a cello. In addtion to recording two LPs, they appeared in "Diamond Stud," a musical about the life of Jesse James, at the Mill Mountain Playhouse in Roanoke, Virginia. Band members included Michael James Kott, Brad Leftwich, Al Tharp, Steve Gendron, and Andy Williams. The group eventually reduced to a trio and toured Europe in the late 1970s.

Tracks for JA015, Plank Road, were recorded August 29-31, 1977, and engineered by Doug Dorschug. The Technical Director was B. Henrie.

This audio collection consists of ¼-inch production masters, and vinyl production masters.
