Wisconsin native John McCutcheon (born August 14, 1952) is an American folk music singer and multi-instrumentalist who has produced over twenty-five albums since the 1970s. He is regarded as a master of the hammered dulcimer, and is also proficient on many other instruments including guitar, banjo, autoharp, mountain dulcimer, fiddle, and Jew's harp. McCutcheon was a founder of June Appal Recordings at Appalshop and was instrumental to the label's output in its early years.

Recordings for JA014, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, were recorded in 1977 by Jack Wright and Jeff Kiser, and mixed by Jack Wright and John McCutcheon. Musicians included John McCutcheon on hammer dulcimers, fiddle, guitar and vocals; Paul Reisler on guitar; Tina Liden-Jones on concertina and vocals; Bob Jordan on guitar and "snores"; and Rich Kirby on mandolin and banjo. The group was collectively referred to as The Morbid Pumpernickel Choir.
