Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of 52 microcassettes and regular audiocassettes of oral histories interviews, most of which focus on coal camp life in Wheelwright, KY and Harlan County, KY. Subtopics of interest to the interviewer (Verburg) include coal camp churches and the separation of Black community and White community churches. Other interviews included in the collection focus on the Tollesboro, KY school system. The tapes which date from early 1990s to early 2000s have inconsistent audio quality. The tapes were donated by John Verburg, a scholar in sociology of religion and community with a focus on Appalachia. Most tapes are archival original microcassettes; others are research copies made for Verburg from the collections at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College.
